It isn’t something we take delight in thinking about, but with the beginning of old age, we may see the need to start thinking of ways we could alter our home so that it will be more suitable to use in the future. What do we mean when we say this?

Regrettably, with advancing age, often comes more health problems. One such problem is limited mobility. For some, an additional adjustment that can accompany retirement is less of an income. So, are there some things that can be done ahead of time to prepare for these possibilities?

Are there any home improvement projects that you have been thinking of doing in the near future? If you are going to make any substantial changes like having a new kitchen or bathroom, it would be a good idea to think ways you can incorporate certain features into the design that would make life easier for someone with limited mobility. What kinds of features should be incorporated?

In a kitchen or bathroom, think about choosing easy to clean surfaces and slip-resistant flooring. Designing cabinets so that everything is easy to reach.

Other adjustments that could make life easier in the future are installing low-density carpet, intercoms or video phones, a central vacuum system is very useful and convenient.

Are you considering redoing your closets? Choose things like adjustable shelving and hanging rods that would be convenient to use for someone who can’t reach high areas. Another good thing to do is to make sure there is good lighting in there. Install a closet door that is very easy to open.
